The MTR is Hong Kong’s metro network. It extends throughout Hong Kong and connects every section of Hong Kong Island and the new territories. It also connects to Lantau island via the Tung Chung line and Airport Express! The East Rail line is the only rail line that has a first class cabin. It’s not vastly different to standard class except the seats are more comfortable and there’s more space as it’s normally less crowded than standard class. The line extends from the border of China down to Admiralty, Hong Kong’s banking CBD. The East Rail line is also called the KCR (Kowloon-Canton Railway). It ran as a separate entity until 2007 when the MTR took over. It is the longest running railway in Hong Kong as the initial section began operations in 1910. In the 1960s, it ran between Tsim Tsa Tsui and Shenzhen (and also had a cross-country train to Beijing). In 2022, the East Rail Line was extended to include stations: Exhibition Centre and Admiralty. Finally linking the border of China with the centre of Hong Kong. For people (like myself) who live in the new territories or on Kowloon side, this much anticipated extension has been a real game changer! I recorded my journey in the first class cabin for the entire length of the new East Rail line from Sheung Shui to Admiralty - it’s changed a lot since 1910!!
