(26 Jun 1998) Natural Sound Argentine President Carlos Menem has met the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Alexy II in Moscow during the first visit to Russia by an Argentine leader. The Patriarch showed Menem around the newly re-built Cathedral to Christ the Saviour before presenting him with a plate depicting the massive church. The Cathedral to Christ the Saviour was only re-built a year ago but it has become a stopping off place for many leaders as they pass through Moscow. On Friday it was the turn of the President of Argentina, Carlos Menem. The original cathedral was razed to the ground by Stalin in the thirties but was re-built quickly thanks to the efforts of Moscow's Mayor Luzhkov. The head of the Russian Church, Alexy II gave President Menem a personal tour of the vast cathedral before asking the Argentine leader to sign the visitors' book. He wrote a message of goodwill as well as marvelling at the spectacle of such a building. Then the Patriarch presented Menem with a special plate depicting the cathedral and some of the icons it contains. This was the last of Menem's officials duties in Moscow before flying out to Russia's second capital, St Petersburg on Saturday.
