It can be used in different groups of people and diseases but you primarily see it used either after a knee or hip replacement surgery and if you want to treat or prevent a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) or PE (Pulmonary Embolism). But unlike other 'blood thinners' (i.e., warfarin (Coumadin)) it is not affected by certain foods. It also acts differently in the body by basically blocking activation of your platelets which leads to blocking clot formation. The major side effects are all going to be bleeding related with hemorrhage, nosebleeds and blood in the urine as possibilities.
