Imagine trying to balance on a pedestal... while dancing. That's the challenge Alina and Adam of the CommonWealth Dance Collective were faced with when they performed the Marley Clog Hornpipe, a historical dance preserved from the Vaudeville era. It's not CGI -- they really are dancing on pedestals with surfaces that are barely larger than the size of their feet! 🫣😮🤯 THE PERFORMANCE: Musicians: Luke Panning (fiddle) and Myron Grant (guitar) Location: Wheatland Traditional Arts Weekend 2019 THE MARLEY PROJECT: PRESERVING VAUDEVILLE HISTORY The Marley Clog is a 100+ year-old hornpipe routine from the Vaudeville era, representing a unique piece of American dance history. Lineage of the Dance: • Origin: The Marley Family via Anna Marley • Passed to: Tony Barrand & Kari Smith • Preserved by: Sheila Graziano Today, Sheila and Adam Wheeler lead "The Marley Project" to document and preserve these rare wooden-shoe dances. This work was supported by a grant from the Ann Arbor Community for Traditional Music and Dance (AACTMAD). ABOUT THE COLLECTIVE: Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the CommonWealth Dance Collective (CDC) is an ensemble dedicated to preserving and performing traditional percussive dance.
