Exploring an historical lava tube | New Mexico Wilderness Adventures

Join me on an exciting caving adventure in the wilds of Northern New Mexico! In this video, filmed September 2021, I journey through the Carson National Forest with a small party to finally access an historical lava tube which took diligent research and several scouting attempts to finally locate. It was very mentally engaging to track down the entrance to this geological feature. I initially learned of it through a local Facebook group after posting a question asking about local caving sites. The information provided to me by one of the group members, other than the official name of the cave, seems to have been deliberately erroneous, as he stated the cave could be accessed by a raft via the nearby Rio Grande Gorge, and was on the property of a violently reclusive rancher. This conflicted with an official state paleontology survey I later found online which provided me GPS coordinates to finally be able to pinpoint the exact location on Google Earth, finally ending weeks of fruitless scouting attempts that were actually way off the correct path.
