Effects of Hydrocephalus on Cognitive Development: A Neuropsychological Perspective

Medical advances have expanded the lifespan of individuals with conditions such as obstructive hydrocephalus well into adulthood. While historically considered a medical population, individuals with histories of hydrocephalus are now living longer and are increasingly transitioning into adult health care systems. Neuropsychological consultation and rehabilitation can be an important part of this health care transition, particularly for individuals with cognitive difficulties. This presentation will review neuropsychological findings associated with hydrocephalus in childhood and adolescence, and will provide practical strategies for addressing some of the associated problems commonly experienced in academic, vocational and social functioning. A specific emphasis will be placed upon the challenges faced by youth with histories of hydrocephalus as they move into the roles and responsibilities of adulthood. Tiffany B. Cobb, PhD
