New Waterford is a beautiful Town with landscapes and rugged coastlines. It was a busy Community that always buzzed with excitement. Cape Breton Island was known for its rich Coal Mines and in the late 90''s the Federal Government announced to close all Mines on the Island. It was announced by then Finance Minister and soon to be Prime Minister, Paul Martin. Shortly after the Mines closed foreign Coal was brought into Canada by Martins Family Company, Canadian Steam Lines from South America. Eventually many businesses closed and Substance Abuse with a bad Oxy Codone epidemic ran rapid through many of the small Towns on the Island. My Father was a Coal Miner and a very proud Worker, to this day Cape Breton has successfully transitioned from a Coal Mine and Steel Island to Tourism and Culture. Many Towns like New Waterford, Northside and Glace Bay have never recovered from the Closures.
