Description: Spent a relaxing afternoon at the Tama River in Chofu, Tokyo for some casual fishing and riverside relaxation. While the Tama River flows 138km from the mountains to Tokyo Bay, the stretch near Chofu is one of the best spots for a quick getaway from the city's hustle. Whether you're an experienced angler or just looking for a "neighborhood fishing" experience, the riverbanks here are perfect for a low-key day out. We set up near the Chofu Sluice area, which is a popular spot for both local bait fishers and lure enthusiasts. What we found: Fish Species: The mid-section of the river is surprisingly diverse! You can find Carp (Koi), Crucian Carp (Herabuna), Smallmouth Bass, and even Catfish. In certain seasons, you might even spot migratory species like Maruta (Far Eastern Dace). The Vibe: Beyond fishing, the Chofu riverfront is a hub for cycling, running, and picnics. It’s a great place to watch the sunset over the water with the city skyline in the distance. Quick Tips for Fishing the Tama River: Licenses: Most sections of the river are managed by local Fishery Cooperatives. For casual fishing, look for a local tackle shop to pick up a daily permit (yuugyo-ken), which usually costs around ¥500 to ¥1,000 for the day. Access: Very easy to reach from Chofu Station (Keio Line) or Tamagawa Station. Just a short walk or bike ride will get you right to the water. Gear: If you're a beginner, a simple telescoping pole with earthworms or dough bait works wonders for the smaller species like Dace or Chub. Thanks for watching!
