Without putting AJ Kim on the same pedestal as Mozart: he too explores the sound possibilities of the drums with the intellect of a composer and the joy of playing of a child. There is never a lack of ideas - sometimes so many come at him at the same time that for a moment you think Roy Haynes and Elvin Jones are playing the basement drums simultaneously. Then a new, unheard-of mixture of tones emerges, groove and sound become an uplifting whole, and a smile spreads across Kim's face, the expression of an artist who is surprised by his own actions - and by how the instrument 'reacts' to his ideas. Isn't that what people are looking for when they play: that something comes out of them that they cannot foresee? Something that comes entirely from inspiration, which is why it also makes the person who created it amazed and smile? That is the Mozart moment. There are a few such moments to be discovered in Kim's solo. A lot of practice and craftsmanship makes it possible. But we, who far too often only listen to reproduced music, then become witnesses to its creation - it is not Kim who speaks through the instrument, but the instrument through him. Dann ensteht ein neues, un-erhörtes Klangfarbengemisch, aus Groove und Sound wird ein erhebendes Ganzes, und auf Kims Gesicht breitet sich ein Lächeln aus, der Gesichtsausdruck eines Künstlers, der überrascht wird vom eigenen Tun – und davon, wie das Instrument auf seine Ideen ›reagiert‹. Ist es nicht das, was der Mensch sucht, wenn er spielt: Dass aus ihm etwas hervorkommt, das er nicht vorwissen kann? Etwas, das ganz der Eingebung entspringt, weshalb es auch den, der es geschaffen hat, zum Staunen und zum Lächeln bringt? Das ist der Mozart-Moment. Solche sind in Kims Solo einige zu entdecken. Viel Übung und Handwerk macht sie möglich. Wir aber, die viel zu oft nur wiedergegebene Musik hören, werden dann zu Zeugen ihrer Hervorbringung – nicht Kim spricht durch das Instrument, sondern das Instrument durch ihn.
