On August 9, Belarus held its now-infamous 2020 Presidential elections. With reports of widespread fraud, citizens throughout the country went on peaceful demonstrations. Yet, the cost of freedom proved to be high for Belarusians. The riot police fired live ammunition at the peaceful protesters detaining and torturing thousands, all this while the real democratically elected president was banished from the country. The subsequent violent crackdown, arbitrary imprisonments, and torture captivated the world’s attention. Nevertheless, as the protests continued into the winter to no visible avail, Belarus soon faded into obscurity. In the meantime, however, the Belarusians fed up with three decades of dictatorial rule continue to go out on the streets despite the danger to defend their rights to freedom. UCL Diplomacy Society partnered up with the Belarusian People’s Embassy, representing the Belarusian diaspora in the UK, to explore the human rights dimension of the protests. We interviewed three victims of state repression about their experiences of torture and political repression. To get a better perspective of what the future holds for Belarus, we also interviewed a leading Belarusian journalist, Hanna Lyubakova. Music by Oliver Quarry: https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/EtChwqW...
