I always felt that if we could bring awareness into a grounded state, it would be the key to feeling integrated and settled. Creatively, I wanted to express this, and to me, being grounded is being rooted. I've done many meditation, where I was guided to imagine roots sinking deep into the earth. Roots can be part of a tree system. And from there; the concept of The Tree and Key artwork can into being. I start also explore folklore, symbolism and mysticism, and was enthralled by my research around ancient myth. In the old stories, the tree carries healing in a way we have almost forgotten. It is not only a living being, but a map, of grounding, of belonging, of how life sustains itself through connection and depth. Across folklore, symbolism and mysticism, the tree has long been understood as a bridge between worlds: roots reaching into darkness and mineral memory. With branches lifting toward light and air. This visual meditation explores the ancient symbolism of the Tree and the Key through art. Other episodes in the series; creative mediations and storytelling, are all quietly contemplative. In folklore, trees were often seen as sentient guardians. Sacred groves were places of initiation, healing and revelation. Roots were believed to carry memory, touching layers of stone and mineral older than language. Forests were not empty spaces, but living networks, communicating, sharing nourishment, stabilising the land after storms. To stand among trees was to be held within an intelligence larger than the self. The key, suspended or hidden within this landscape, appears across myth as a symbol of access and readiness. Keys do not force entry; they are given when the moment is right. In symbolic traditions, the key represents clarity, permission, and the unlocking of inner thresholds. When paired with the tree, it becomes a metaphor for grounding that opens awareness, a reminder that steadiness can create insight. Together, the Tree and the Key speak to a deep human need: to feel rooted in a world that moves too fast. The concept for the artwork came from my belief that if we explored the rituals of grounding practices, it would be the key to Self awareness. We can easily find ourselves out of alignment, albeit for a minute, or perhaps a lifetime - grounding gives an anchors. To remember that clarity comes from settling, not striving. Through a wellbeing lens, this symbolism mirrors the body and nervous system. Like roots anchoring soil, grounding practices stabilise us during emotional storms. Slow breath, presence and sensory awareness echo the tree’s rhythm, unhurried, cyclical, responsive rather than reactive. The key becomes the moment when the body recognises safety, allowing the mind to soften and perspective to return. So much is there, woven through the pencil marks.
