They are stunning Tholos Tombs with massive megalithic doorways and beehive stone roofs showing remarkable stone working sophistication. The Treasury of Atreus was constructed during the Bronze Age around 1250 BC. The stone lintel above the doorway weighs 120 tons. Also known as the Tomb of Agamemnon, it is the largest and most impressive of the nine tholos tombs at Mycenae. The tomb stands by itself, located well away from the other ‘royal’ tombs. The Lion Tomb, situated just outside the citadel walls, suffered the collapse of its tholos, and now offers a wide-open view and dates to around 1350 BC.
