When I first visited Woodstock (Cape Town) in 2018 I was thrilled by the artsy spirit and liberal free thinking attitude of the people I encountered on the street. There were only murmers of the word #gentrification. I wanted to review that experience this past week of July 2024. The Woodstock beach has long been forgotten and the The Old Castle Brewery Building - A.D. 1901 stands proud as a bastion to anyone coming in to Woodstock from the N1 Freeway. Of course the Old Biscuit Mill, #woodstockmarket , Railway Station and Devils Peak are all synonimous with what will be found in Woodstock (Formerly Papendorp) as are the world class Street Art painted on the front of many buildings, walls and businesses. I feel that Woodstock has lost it's soul. Whether through C19 or gentrification or maybe a third reason I know nothing of. Many properties are looking much, much better but at what cost to those who originally made up the patchwork of cultures that Woodstock represented. I hope and pray that some of that is woven back into the fabric of Woodstock once it has reinvented itself. #iLoveCapeTown #capetown #capetownlife
