Howler Monkey Howling: Mantled Howler Monkeys of Costa Rica

A mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) calling out in northern Costa Rica. There was another male about 50 meters to the left of me. At the start of the video, the male seen here seems to moving its mouth to the sounds of the other male off screen. It makes for odd audio, but it is true to the experience. It was so amazing when I was woken up on my first morning by their calls! Following this male's big eruption of emotion and sound, it's so interesting to see the look on the female's and baby's face. In my far-from-expert opinion, I get the impression she is hoping to calm her young one. Mantled howler monkeys are called mono congo in Costa Rica. Their calls are the loudest of any new world monkeys, and can be heard over several kilometers, even in dense jungle. The volume of their calls is produced from the oversized hyoid bone in their large larynx and throats. Male mantled howlers have a hyoid bone 25x larger than that of those found in similarly sized spider monkeys. These bones are hollow, allowing the bone to act like the body of a drum in amplifying calls. Females also have a call, but it is higher pitched and not as loud. The calls typically happen at dusk and dawn, or in response to any sort of disturbance. Vocalizations are used to mark territory and communicate to others within the troop. Spacing between troops is partly dependent upon vocal communication between males. Mantled howlers live a low energy lifestyle due to their low energy diet, which is made up mostly of foliage. The ability to produce these loud calls is likely an energy saving device, allowing them to locate each other without needing to move or running the risk of physical confrontations. It was getting quite late in the day when I filmed this. The low light has this footage a bit grainy. And I've randomly thrown in some footage of a sunset at Tarcoles, which was nowhere near where I filmed these howler monkeys!
