Millions of cats worldwide suffer of Hip Dysplasia. Leo's recovery after first FHO surgery (follow LeoBC Adventure cat on IG #callmeleo_mainecooncat). Well known in dogs, hip dysplasia has received little attention in cats. A few studies indicate, it is common in Mainecoon (25-35%). Surgery involves the removal of the head of the femur. Initially, the muscles of the leg will hold the femur in place. Over time, scar tissue will form to provide cushioning that is referred to as a 'false joint'. That provides pain-free full mobility. We looked after Leo 24/7 and, for the first two weeks, slept on a mattress beside his "cage/playpen", continuously looking after him (we are retired)/ Immediately after surgery, Leo was on NSAID (Onsior) for 7 days and on pain medication (Gabapentin) for more than 4 weeks. We also kept him from jumping by making his catio off limit, covering cat trees, and providing steps so that he could join us on the sofa or on our bed without jumping. Six weeks after surgery, he was essentially acting normal, as his muscles got stronger. Leo is due for another FHO on the other side....sigh.
