Professor Gerald Horne is the John J. and Rebecca Moores Chair of African American History at the University of Houston. With over 40 books to his name, Professor Horne has become one of the most influential voices on issues of anti-imperialism, the rise of white supremacy, and settler colonialism. His major works include The Counter-Revolution of 1776, where he argues that the American Revolution was partly driven by colonists’ desire to maintain the system of slavery, challenging our foundational ideas about American freedom. Another key work, The Apocalypse of Settler Colonialism, examines how European colonial powers established systems of racial and economic exploitation that continue to shape global dynamics today. Professor Horne’s research not only brings a critical lens to U.S. history but also explores how these themes of imperialism, racial injustice, and colonialism connect to broader struggles for liberation around the world. This interview was recorded on 7th of November 2024. We discussed the consequences of Trump’s reelection for the American empire during its period of decline, how or if the US will change its strategies and tactics towards China, Russia, and Iran, and finally, how the Global South will respond to these changes.
