The Gulf Cartel (Cartel del Golfo) is one of the oldest and most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico, originating in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas. Established in the 1930s, it initially focused on bootlegging during the Prohibition era before transitioning to drug trafficking, particularly cocaine, in the latter half of the 20th century. During the 1990s and early 2000s, the Gulf Cartel expanded its operations and influence under the leadership of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, becoming one of Mexico's most dominant cartels. It was known for its brutal enforcement arm, Los Zetas, composed of former elite Mexican military personnel. However, a split between the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas in 2010 led to a violent and ongoing conflict between the two groups, weakening the Gulf Cartel's power. Today, the Gulf Cartel remains active, primarily engaged in drug trafficking, extortion, human trafficking, and other criminal activities. However, internal strife and pressure from law enforcement and rival cartels have diminished its influence, causing the group to fracture into smaller factions. Despite these challenges, it continues to be a significant player in Mexico's ongoing drug-related violence.
