A new age of journalism has entered the chat. In recent years, podcasting has grown increasingly popular and more and more people are looking to take advantage of this creative space. On Saturday, Memphis held its inaugural Podbox Festival, a network focused on bringing together podcast enthusiasts and creating excitement around the latest trends for the purpose of gaining insight into the tools needed to create a viable podcast platform. The event was held downtown at the Cossit Branch Library and included several guests and content creators such as popular radio personalities Ena Esco, Tina Tilton and Mike Evans, as well as, other veteran podcasters and entrepreneurs. Together they discuss the risk and rewards of creating the ultimate podcast experience. Just like journalists, podcasters produce and disseminate information with the difference being podcasters do not just break the news they create it. While finding and focusing on their purpose, podcasters introduce their audience to things that you probably would not see within the traditional broadcast news cycle. For podcasters, their niche is their passion. They also tend to focus on things that are unique to their talent and abilities. Take for instance “Natasha”, host of the Extra-T Podcast which, is centered on providing a space for everyday people to discuss sensitive topics and embark on a journey of self awareness and wellness. Natasha says “When you don’t know which way to go you’re just lost and want to feel heard…that’s what I’m aiming for.” Keynote speaker, Danielle Desir Corbett capped off the panel by discussing the importance of producing interesting content and strategies for monetization. Nevertheless, the fun did not stop there as some attendees participated in a podcast pitch competition with the winner receiving a slot on "Bumpin 96.3 fm".
