Mary Shelley, born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, was a 19th-century British writer, best known for her gothic novel Frankenstein. The daughter of intellectuals, her life was marked by tragedy and intellectual restlessness. Shelley wrote Frankenstein at the age of 18, inspired by a dream during the "Year Without a Summer" in 1816. The book, published anonymously in 1818, is considered a precursor to science fiction. In addition to Frankenstein, Mary Shelley wrote other novels and dedicated herself to preserving the literary legacy of her husband, Percy Shelley. She passed away in 1851, but her work remains influential.
