Ukrainian Revolution: The emergence of a new government and development of a civil war On November 21, 2013, Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovuch canceled and agreement with the European Union to pursue one with Russia. The angered civilians, prepared mass protests across Ukraine for months. Months later, Ukraine’s Parliament accused President Viktor Yanukovuch for the murder of innocent and pacific protesters. An arrest warrant was issued and the President was ousted. Yanukovych managed to fled the country into Russia. After ousting the President, pro-Russian armed separatists gradually took over the Crimean Peninsula, starting protests and unleashing an armed conflict in the zone. It was later discovered, that the armed separatists were Russian soldiers, who managed to seize control of Crimea. Elections were held and a new president, Petro Poroshenko, was elected. War continued until a peace agreement took place. Around 10,000 people lost their lives in the crisis. Among international opposition to Russia’s actions, a series of tight economic sanctions were imposed to Russia by the EU and the US. The G8 nations, kicked Russia from the council and became the G7. Ukraine’s government took a series of actions to rescue its poor economy and to combat government corruption. A new declaration system forces officials and family members to disclose their assets. This have led to the arrest of several officials based on the charge of corruption. Ukraine’s economic reforms are expected to improve the GDP by 2.9% in 2017.
