If you're a poor guy like me, you may have to invest in used implements. Many times when you buy a used post hole digger or rotary cutter, some of the safety gear is gone. One of the most common items that can be missing or damaged, and potentially one of the most dangerous, is a PTO shield. I purchased a used brush hog with the front half of the PTO shield completely gone. It was probably removed because the back half of the same shaft had been mashed and they have to be perfect in order for the big tube to fit over the small tube (as shown in the video). So, likely, when the incident happened the back half of the tube was crushed and whoever owned it probably just removed the front half and went back to cutting, with everything spinning around dangerously. So I was forced to break down and buy the PTO shield assembly. They're kind of expensive, but well worth it because they can prevent serious injury. In this video I'll show you how to uninstall an old shield then reinstall the new shields so the cutter will again be safe. Once these tubes are on, the PTO shaft spins inside, while the tubes stay fixed. It's pretty critical to keep the shields filled with grease and I discuss that in the video. I have seen shields that twist on, then there's a tab that must be clicked in place to keep them locked on. You may encounter something like that when shopping for a replacement, they still function about the same as the ones in the video. Again, while you have everything apart it's a great time to grease the u-joints. Keep them lubed with grease and they'll last a lot longer.
