In this 1992 edition of HoCoPoLitSo's "The Writing Life," professor Coilin Owens of George Mason University speaks with Edna O'Brien, an Irish playwright, memoirist, poet and fiction writer. Novelist Philip Roth described her "the most gifted woman now writing in English." The two discuss her work and its connection to Irish culture, Ireland's negative reaction to her first book, the instinctive and emotional nature of her work and the importance of James Joyce. Ms. O'Brien reads from her short story, "Lantern Slides," from the book of the same name.
