Once you hit High Rank, everything out in the field upgrades to this rank. This means that some materials end up locked out, as they're only available in Low Rank (and the same enemy in High Rank has a different thing, or bonepiles/mining and so on). Unfortunately, it appears the only way to swap back to low rank is to start an Optional Quest for something that is Low Rank (1-3 stars). Further, you need to make sure that the quest is for the area you want to hunt in. So, say, you're looking to hunt Ceratonoth's for Herbivore Shells - you'll want to start a Low Rank quest in the Plains to hunt them down. You will also need to start a Low Rank hunt if you're looking for LR materials from Large Monsters as well. Thankfully, you can just accept a quest for that particular monster!
