In the year 1910, the district of Ramanathapuram was established by merging sections from the Madurai and Tirunelveli districts. The inaugural collector was Shri J.F. BRYANT I.C.S. During the colonial era, this district was referred to as Ramnad, a designation that persisted post-independence. Subsequently, the district was renamed Ramanathapuram to align with the Tamil nomenclature for the area. Additionally, Ramanathapuram is colloquially known as Mugavai, as the River Vaigai concludes its course here, flowing into the Palk Strait. According to Government Order Ms.No. 347 dated March 8, 1985, Ramanathapuram was divided into three distinct districts on March 15, 1985: Sivagangai District, which includes the Taluks of Thiruppattur, Karaikudi, Devakottai, Sivaganga, Manamadurai, and Illaiyankudi. Virudhunagar District, comprising the Taluks of Sriviliputur, Virudhunagar, Thiruchuli, Aruppukottai, Sathur, and Rajapalayam.
