He was training in the disciplines of classical vocal music at the age of fifteen from Pandit Raja Ram of Benares Gharana, but changed his focus to the flute after hearing a recital by Pandit Bholanath. Chaurasia is considered to be one of India’s most-respected classical musicians; earning him several prestigious awards and honours – which included the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Sangeet Natak Academy Fellowship Award, National Eminence, the title ‘Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau’ by the Dutch Royal family at Amsterdam, Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of France, amongst many others. He serves as the artistic director of the World Music Department at the Rotterdam Music Conservatory in the Netherlands. At the concluding session of the first edition of the Bengal Classical Music Festival held in 2012 in Dhaka, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s magical presentation in raga Maru Bihag mesmerised the audience. He also performed raga Hamsadhwani. He concluded his performance with Bhatiyali dhun. Pt Subhankar Banerjee’s superb tabla accompaniment along with Pakhwaj's bol by Pandit Bhabani Shankar and Vivek Sonar’s restrained artistry in the accompanying flute added to the extraordinary appeal of Panditji’s recital. ┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉ Recorded at Bengal Classical Music Festival on 1 December 2012, at Army Stadium, Dhaka: Raga Hamsadhwani ┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉┉ Artistes: -Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute) -Pt Subhankar Banerjee (tabla) -Pt Bhavani Shankar (pakhawaj) -Vivek Sonar (support flute) ----------------------------------------------------------- Bengal Foundation has been promoting Bengali music for decades in order to nurture and uphold the musical traditions of Bengal.
