In this video we see some afternoon peak hour action at Glenhuntly, a station on the Frankston line in Melbourne's inner south east. Glenhuntly is a unique station in Melbourne as it's the location of one of Melbourne's last three remaining tram squares, a level crossing where the 600v tram lines intersect with the 1500v rail lines at ground level. We start the video at the station platforms where we see various Comeng, Siemens and X'trapolis trains, including several (slow moving) express trains utilising the third track. We then head to the tram square where we see additional trains as well as a couple of trams passing over the tram square. Glenhuntly station opened on the 19 December 1881 as Glen Huntly Road, before being renamed Glen Huntly on 1 September 1882, and then Glenhuntly on 20 April 1937. The current island platform (platforms 1 & 2) was built in 1987 when the third line between Caulfield and Moorabbin was constructed (I'm pretty sure the current platform 3 is the original). Most times trains use platforms 1 & 2, with platform 3 only being used for passengers during the morning peak. Being the largest of the remaining tram squares and one of the busiest, Glenhuntly station will soon be rebuilt to grade separate the level crossings at Glen Huntly Road (thus removing the tram square) and nearby Neerim Road. Works will begin next year and is expected to be completed by 2023. I didn't film too many trams on this occasion as the video mostly focuses on the peak hour train action. I'll do another video here at Glenhuntly of the tram square, and the nearby Neerim Road level crossing at a later date. Date: November 2020.
