Two key areas of Māori art that enjoyed enormous growth in the nineties were Kapahaka and Tā Moko . One of the key figures in both art forms was Ta Derek Lardelli. In the early nineties unlike today there were not a lot of Tohunga Ta Moko operating. Renowned Ta Moko artists like Tame Poata had passed on in the forties and so there was an enormous gap in Mātauranga around this art form. Huge credit has to go to Derek and others like Laurie Nichols who had the challenging task of research and experimentation so that the art of Tā Moko could live. My film follows Hone Waipara from Rongowhakaata receiving his puhoro on the marae of Rongowhakaata . Two esteemed kaumatua who have since sadly passed on Piri Sciascia and Amster Reedy talk about the korero behind their puhoro as well as Barry Soutar from Te Tai Rawhiti The Producers were Karen Sydney and Gabrielle Huria Big Mihi to to Ken Sparks who edited the excerpt.
