3 of 5 This is the 3rd video in this series: Learning glazing from Bouguereau. Here I focus on painting the grisaille underpainting in preparation for the glazing, and show the first part of this process. The video talks through some of the ways I approach painting a grisaille and what it needs to function in a way that will support the glazing. I chose this part of a William Bouguereau painting because it is instructive in this process and his work provides many clues as to how glazing works. William Bouguereau created many paintings using this technique, but usually when you see copies made of his paintings the artists may used different techniques and do not necessarily glaze over a grisaille underpainting. Here I am trying to be as authentic as possible, and to adhere to his process as closely as I can. Bouguereau did also glaze over coloured underpainting but here I am focussing on black and white grisaille to demonstrate the glazing technique. Often people ask about various ways William Bouguereau painted his pictures, and here I hope to provide some answers, at least to myself because I have asked these questions for many years.
