Is it a guitar or is it a toy? The Jamsktik+ is a midi over Bluetooth 4LE device that opens up a world of interesting possibilities for guitarists and those who want to learn guitar. It's far from perfect as a guitar replacement but it's brilliant for getting ideas down on the go without having to carry around half a recording studio - just the Jamstik+, a iPhone/iPad/Macbook and a pair of headphones and you have a great little recording rig. It does have a little bit of latency (sometimes more than others for some unknown reason) but nothing that should worry you too much. You can plug it in directly with the supplied USB cable to your Mac or via the Camera Connection Kit for you i-Device. You get everything you need in the box including a couple of picks and a strap and you can download 4 apps from the App Store free of charge - one that connects the device that has a few sampled guitars to play with (you can download more sounds), 2 that teach you to play guitar in a Guitar Hero kind of way and one that lets you jam along to some tunes. The downsides are that hammer-ons and note bends are pretty useless but can be customised using the software if you can be bothered - hopefully future firmware and software updates will make this work better. I also find it a bit small to hold comfortably but you kind of get used to it although I would not like to play for hours upon hours as I am certain your wrists would suffer! All in all it's a great little gadget that does work pretty well for getting down quick ideas that you may have whilst travelling or jamming with your mates.
