On Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 10:30am, St. Paul's United Church held a special service remembering Gordon Lightfoot, who got his start here. During this service, St. Paul's Orillia had the honor of welcoming 5-time Juno award-winning Liona Boyd via video, recognized as Canada's First Lady of Guitar. Ms. Boyd participated through a specially created video for the Lightfoot Days Festival 2024 at St. Paul's, in which she shared her experiences of meeting and performing alongside the folk music legend, Gordon Lightfoot. The Sunday service featured special guests, the Orillia Community Children's Choir, under the direction of Julia Johnston. They presented a new composition by Julia that combined the children's voices with an historic early recording made of young Gordie Lightfoot when he was around 12 years old in the St. Paul's Choir, recorded in this very spot. Due to distortion and crackle on the original recording, we asked sound engineer, Rob Currie, to help us restore the recording, and he was able to isolate young Gordie's voice using the latest A.I. techniques. This allowed us to have Gordie sing 'live' with Julia's Children's Choir. Plus, this was one of the pieces ("The Alpine Song" by John Ireland) that Gordie sang at Massey Hall in Toronto in the early 1950s when he won First Prize at the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival two years in a row for best boy soprano. Check out the service on the "St Paul's Orillia" YouTube Channel. It was featured twice on CTV News, as the church was packed for this special celebration of music and memories. All of this is a testament to Lightfoot's enduring legacy and to the spirit of the St Paul's community where Lightfoot's love of music was first kindled. Thank you once again to Ms. Liona Boyd for this excellently produced video document highlighting her time with Lightfoot and for giving a 'shout out' to the Children's Choir. Thanks also to Steve Porter, Director of the Lightfoot Days Festival 2024 and their committee for supporting the Sunday Service at St Paul's. And to think that just a few weeks later, Liona Boyd would be inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. Congratulations, Liona! Lastly, an anonymous donor recently acquired over $300,000 worth of memorabilia related to Lightfoot, including guitars, clothing, and documents, at an auction in Dallas, Texas. This remarkable collection has been donated to the Orillia Museum of Art and History for a permanent rotating exhibit. What an incredible contribution!
