The Venetian Castle is a very interesting place to visit. The Venetian castle is located on the Bóchali hill above the town of Zakynthos. This castle was built on the site of the island's ancient acropolis and also on the site of a former Byzantine castle. Due to time, war attacks and earthquakes, the castle was partially damaged. During the Venetian rule, the castle was the capital of the island of Zakynthos. Soon after its construction, the castle was destroyed by an invasion of the Turks. In 1514 it was repaired, again by the Venetians. Strong and frequent earthquakes destroyed the fortifications so often that they had to be constantly rebuilt. The construction of the walls and defense system of the fortress, which have survived to this day, was completed in 1646.
