Hey folks, A little bit of a throwback here, but I've basically been to the Cass Scenic Railroad every year since 2013, and other than a quick video from 2013, I have yet to upload any of the footage. With that being said, due to the COVID-19 crisis and having some more free time, I figured I would change that fact. The Cass Scenic is one of my favorite places to visit, as it is mesmerizing to see so many Shay geared steam locomotives in action, truly a step back into time. In October of 2017, I made a trip down to Cass with my dad for the weekend. We started off with a shop tour in the morning, which allowed for some sweet views of the morning hostlers moving the locomotives around for the day's excursions. Also included is a look at Western Maryland "Big Shay 6" under its FRA mandated inspection at the time this video was taken. After that, we'll first watch the Whittaker train depart Cass, then board our Bald Knob train. This ride was rare, as Cass is basically like Seattle where it rains most of the time, and we had a perfectly clear day. On our way up, we'll catch up with the Whittaker train at the switchback, then meet the Durbin and Greenbriar Valley Railroad's "Cheat Mountain Salamander" at Old Spruce with a rare EMD BL2 for power, and finally a third Shay-powered train, whose destination I do not recall. Our motive power for our ride up the mountain is Pacific Coast Shay #2, which was unveiled after its massive overhaul/rebuild in June of 2016. It is sporting a single chime "hooter" whistle, which was deafening to listen to in the first car of the train, and much to the chagrin of my video camera's microphone (I apologize for any sound distortion from this). I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did when I shot it. I'd like to send a special shout out to my friend Karl, who inspired me to upload this video...this one's for you, bud!
