@shipsintropicaloz HMPNGS Francis Agwi (403), Papua New Guinea's Guardian-Class patrol boat, entering Cairns Harbour on 4 Nov 2024. Designed and built by Austal in Western Australia, HMPNGS Francis Agwi helps with Papua New Guinea’s ability to protect its territorial waters and tackle shared maritime security challenges such as illegal and unregulated fishing. Australia has now provided four Guardian Class patrol boats to Papua New Guinea, as part of Australia's longstanding commitment to supporting it's Pacific partners through the Pacific Maritime Security Program. The program is a 30-year commitment by the Australian government to ensure uninterrupted engagement with its Pacific partners in support of a stable, prosperous, and secure region. Guardian Class patrol boats allow Australia's small neighbours to patrol their own economic zones, to control smuggling, unregulated fishing, and perform search and rescue duties. Austal delivered the vessels without armament, but they are designed to be capable of mounting an autocannon of up to 30 mm (1.2 in) on their foredeck, and a heavy machine gun on either side of their bridge.
