🇪🇷 Eritrea is quietly expanding one of its most important economic projects just outside the capital. The Asmara Mining Share Company is developing the Emba Derho open-pit mine and a central processing hub for gold, copper, zinc, and silver. With a 40% state ownership through the Eritrean National Mining Corporation and foreign investment from China’s Sichuan Road and Bridge Mining Investment Company, the project could generate hundreds of millions of dollars in annual export revenue. Gold production alone is estimated at around 42,000 ounces per year, potentially worth over $90 million annually at current prices. Combined with copper and zinc output, the Asmara mining complex could become one of Eritrea’s main sources of foreign currency. But can mining transform Eritrea’s economy — or will the country remain dependent on resource exports?
