Elvis only performed the song for around a year and a half and this volume contains one rendition from each of the six engagements or tours in which Elvis sang it on stage. 00:00 Version One – 28 January 1971, Midnight Show – Las Vegas The Impossible Dream was introduced during Elvis’ opening show of his fourth Las Vegas engagement which began on 26 January 1971. Unfortunately, although the show was taped at the soundboard in it’s entirety, the tape was irrevocably damaged in many parts and the others dispersed among several releases. Among the damaged part was the first live performance of the song which Elvis used to close the show having already performed his standard closing number “Can’t Help Falling In Love” earlier in the show. The next available recording of a live rendition was this version during the midnight show of 28 January, show number five of the engagement. 03:09 Version Two – 24 July 1971, Midnight Show – Lake Tahoe During Elvis’ first engagement in Lake Tahoe, Elvis continued the practice of alternating his closing song between “The Impossible Dream” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. This included this version caught at the conclusion of his 24 July midnight show. 05:53 Version Three – 11 August 1971, Dinner Show During Elvis’ second Las Vegas engagement of 1971, “Can’t Help Falling In Love” had been reinstated as the permanent closing number of the show. This song on the other hand was virtually dropped from the set list as this but the first of just two known renditions throughout the engagement. 08:27 Version Four – 11 November 1971, Cincinnati Elvis’ early winter tour of 1971 was the only tour where the song was on the set list for a sustained period, performed at half of the fourteen shows in the tour. 10:45 Version Five – 16 February 1972, Midnight Show, Las Vegas This was the final time that Elvis would perform the song in Las Vegas and was also the only time during this entire engagement. The fact that Elvis chose to perform it only whilst RCA were recording what is now known as “The Standing Room Only” project is surely no coincidence. However, with that project being scrapped soon after these multi track recordings were completed meant that almost none of them would be released in Elvis’ lifetime. This version of the song would have to wait until 1995 and it’s release on “Walk A Mile In My Shoes - The Essential 70's Masters” before being heard by the public. 13:22 Version Six – 10 June 1972, Evening Show – Madison Square Garden With the shelving of the “Standing Room Only” project, the version performed by Elvis during his third of four shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden would become the first Elvis version to be publicly released. This version, the final time that he would perform the song on stage, would become the most well known Elvis version due to it’s release on the album of the recording of that show. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
