There are three steps that you should consider when choosing your PhD: 1. Choose whether you want to do a PhD after the MBA. A PhD in Business Administration is a rather different degree compared to an MBA. A PhD is much more I can do you a social scientist or a PhD in Chemistry than an MBA. Your job will be focused on discovery. An MBA is focused on execution. You should really go out and ask other people what they think about the PhD in Business Administration. If you want quick returns and probably an easier lifestyle, I would choose to go to a MBA job route. However, the returns on your sense of accomplishment is higher if you do a PhD. It is the same feeling that you might get if you climb a mountain. 2. Choose your field in Business Administration. For me, it was whether I wanted to do a PhD in Finance or a PhD in Strategy. A PhD in Accounting was out. Both of these types of fields are interesting and they pay well. You should really think about what you want to research in the long-run. This will be your life. 3. Choose your set of schools that you are interested in. There are lots of things to consider, such as location and costs. These matter, but, if I were you, I would focus on research interests. You are essentially picking your long-term career in what you do, and if you pick what you like wrong, you can have a life of boredom.
