We left the Galapagos islands and sailed west for French Polynesia. Three thousand miles of open ocean lay before us. We had no idea what lay beneath. Three days into our voyage, we spotted dolphin off the port beam. Slowing the boat to enjoy their company, we saw that they were not alone. A pod of forty to fifty pilot whale swam right up to the boat. After a few shots with the drone, Michelle and I grabbed our snorkel gear and jumped in. The next hour was perhaps the most magical of our lives. We kept expecting the pod to move on, but they returned over and over to swim with us. Dolphin buzzed about; a large shark circled beneath all the action; and Wayfinder lazily bobbed along in the middle of the South Pacific. It was an indescribable thrill to swim in the deep blue sea on a clear day with these gentle monsters all around us. Their songs filled the ocean. You can hear them in some of the clips, even through the GoPro's waterproof housing. To the submerged swimmer, the symphony came from everywhere at once. Beneath it was the familiar clicking of dolphin. Two hours or so after they first appeared, the pod moved on. We resumed our sail, giddy and stunned. Would this be the greatest experience of our lives? Only time will tell...
