Sam Neua city of Houaphan Province, LAOS by Sivis'Art

Sam Neua or Samneua, literally "northern swamp", is the capital city of Houaphan Province, Laos, in the northeast of the country. By the 1960s, the country of the million elephants was juggling conflicts of interest between communists, pro-Americans and neutralizers. So later, when the Second Indochina War broke out, the American aerial bombings covered the sky and sent this country into a state of unprecedented desolation. Many of the locals had to take refuge in the caves of Viengxay in order to escape the incessant foreign cannons. In Sam Neua, more than 20,000 people settled in the heart of the limestone mountains, in their underground "hidden city". They organized their daily lives in these dark caves by building hospitals, schools, markets, radio station and headquarters of the Lao Patriotic Front. During the day, they remained cloistered and terrorized by the rumbling of the shells. At night, they cultivated to have food. After long clashes, the town of Sam Neua was in 1975 the birthplace of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR). The population of this locality is very diverse. Laos, Vietnamese, Hmongs , Thaï Dam, Thaïdeng, and Thaï Lu have taken up residence there. They are known for being warm and welcoming. They tend to grow rice, sesame, corn, soybeans and medicinal plants. In addition to agriculture, they practice a purely traditional craft. In the village of Xamtay, its inhabitants stand out for the incomparable quality of their textile weaving. The same goes for the village of Saleuy (36 km from the city) with its majestic waterfall. At 12 km from Sam Neua, the village Ban Tham promises a unique experience in Buddha’s cave: a cave where an amazing statue of Buddha is stored.
