Backpacking the Wallowa Mountains, Oregon: Eagle Cap Wilderness 40 Mile Hike (July 2021)

PNW hiking - 3 Day/40 Mile Backpacking Trip in the Wallowa Mountains, Oregon July 2021. Sam and I hike the Eagle Cap Wilderness and bag the summit of Eagle Cap on this awesome Oregon backpacking trip. We began out Eagle Cap Wilderness hike at the Wallowa Lake trailhead. We hike up West Fork Wallowa River to Sixmile Meadow, and enter Lake Basin. We hike past a chain of lakes, including Mirror Lake. We swim in moccasin Lake and then hike up to Glacier Pass. We drop down to Glacier Lake and enjoy an incredible alpine lake view, with the reflection of Glacier Peak on the water. The next day, we take a non-standard route up to the summit of Eagle Cap, approaching from Glacier Lake. This route is off-trail, but a mostly class 2 hike to the top. The summit of Eagle Cap offers excellent views of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and the Wallowa Mountains, but forest fire smoke is obscuring out views a bit today. We then hike down the trail from the summit of Eagle Cap to Horton Pass. We hike down from Horton Pass into East Fork Eagle Creek. Then, we go off-trail for a short ways to connect to Frazier Pass. Then we enter Minam Valley, along Minam River. The hiking here is outstanding. We continue our hike to Minam Lake, where we camp for the evening. The next day, we follow Lostine River down to the Two Pan Trailhead and get a hitch back to Wallowa Lake to end our hike.
