The organ mass Annum per annum was composed for the 900th anniversary of the Speyer Dome Church and dedicated to the guardian of the dome, Saint Mary, Mother of God; to Emperor Conrad II, the founder of the dome; to St. Cecilia, the patroness of musicians; and to the organist at Speyer Dome Church, Leo Krämer, who first performed the piece. The work is composed of five movements which are five variations on cantus firmus. The main movements are framed with an introduction and coda, which can be dropped according to a note in the score. They have been marked with the letters K, G, C, S, A, referring to the invariable or ordinary parts of the mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei). These make reference to the mass, which has been held in the Speyer Dome throughout the centuries, annum per annum (Latin for year by year), day by day.
