Man attempts to rob Greggs with a hammer - but got away with nothing

A man attempted to rob a Greggs bakery armed with a hammer - but ended up getting away with nothing. Vincent Foley struck in Handforth, Cheshire, in July this year. He is seen on CCTV released by Cheshire Police donning a balaclava before entering the store. He allegedly assaulted a staff member with a hammer, then attempted to get into the safe. However, he couldn't open it and eventually fled empty handed. On the same day, he broke into a house, stealing a cheque book amongst other items. He tried to write two cheques to himself, but the bank stopped the transactions, police said. Police caught up with him when he was spotted driving erratically in Rochdale, and discovered the stolen cheque book. At Chester Crown Court on August 13, Foley, 43, of Bailey Lane Manchester, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft, attempted robbery, and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He also pleaded not guilty to charges of section 18 wounding with intent and fraud by false representation, and these charges will lie on file. He has been remanded in custody to be sentenced on 11 September.
