Hello Friend and welcome back to my channel! Today we are going to talk about how to train your horse to relax and lower their head when encountering something they are unsure of. This technique works for other instances as well but we are going to use it in the context of clipping a horse’s bridle path. If your horse raises their head when clippers up near his poll and ears then this is the video for you! Our wonderful model is My Dad Said No "Gable" (JC Freshman Phenom). A beautiful 2012 OTTB Gelding owned by Sasha Brindisi. Thank you! Tips: Make sure your horse isn't restrained. Take them off the cross ties but have them haltered with a lead rope. Having them in an area that is enclosed is preferable if they do try to get away from you. Make sure what you are doing isn't hurting the horse. They won't trust you at all if what you are trying to do hurts them (clippers are hot, pulling their mane, etc.) At first you just want to reward the head down /relaxed posture, then you can work towards increasing the time they stay relaxed until you remove the clippers. Eventually the horse won't care how long the clippers are there because they know they aren't a threat. If you horse is incredibly reactive then you can start with your hand instead of the clippers (that are turned off). Gable was very quick to respond to this training but take your time, if your horse has some deep seated insecurities it can take several sessions. If after several sessions you aren't seeing any progress (or your horse is getting worse) have a vet check them out to make sure that there isn't an undiagnosed issue. I have known of horses having ticks in their ears and that is why they didn't want you touching their ears. Never assume the horse is just being bad.
