Ultravox Vienna Cover, Christmas 2020 Recreation

Ultravox Vienna Cover. Thanks to the pandemic, our Christmas Skiing trip was cancelled, so it was time to research and recreate a classic from 1980. I'm a Brass player first and foremost (since the age of 7), but took the chance to learn more about Piano playing (I just wish I was better, and know my piano technique needs a lot of work in the future). Vienna by Ultravox remains timeless, with so much to appreciate from a musical perspective. The more I researched and listened, the more I realised how talented Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Warren Cann, and Chris Cross are. The light and shade, and use of orchestral instruments alongside analogue synthesisers ticks all my boxes. This recreation uses as many"old-school" instruments, effects and recording processes as possible. Not recorded using a DAW, but an Akai DPS24 and MPC instead. A few notes: Recording I used my Akai DPS24 and MPC Live mk2. It was a deliberate move away from my DAW, and I really enjoyed getting back to basics, and something I will do again. Akai, I've enjoyed using the MPC Live mk2, but please add proper tempo control to a sequence! My workaround introduced stepped tempo changes using sequences in song-mode, but I would have preferred to have a true rallentando. My DPS24 is still something I truly love - it's a joy to use (please continue to work). Piano My Kawai ES8, using an octaved-layer for a brighter high-end without resorting to EQ. The original sounds to have a reasonable amount of delay as well as some reverb. To thicken the sound, the L-R channels have some time separation , with added echo from a TC Electronic D-Two, and reverb from an Eventide H9 reverb. Drums Kick and Snare: I understand these were originally from a Roland CR78 with a rhythm created by drummer Warren Cann. I used to read EMM (Electronic Music Maker), and I remember his article well: http://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/ult.... (I used to read EMM and Sound on Sound in my youth). My CR78 Kick and Snare are samples loaded into the Akai MPC Live mk2, with each having their own outputs to the DPS24 for some compression on the Kick, and plate reverb on the Snare. "Thunder" Snare: From my research, I think this was Warren using a Synare 3. I found some samples, but nothing came close to the original. In the end, my sample is a composite of a Synare 3, white noise, and the original from the record with the backing removed using parametric EQ. The composite had some amplitude modulation applied to create the thunder effect across the sounds used, and loaded into the MPC. Drums played using some Roland mesh-pads, and a TD-11 connected to the MPC. Sustained Bass Not too sure on the original source, but I used my Moog Prodigy and Behringer Pro-1 through an Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Deluxe Pi pedal. I have read an Electro-Harmonix effects pedal was used, but think it was a distortion pedal. Sequenced Bass I used my Waldorf Rocket. It's cheap, quick to program and often delivers a good sound. I just wished it had true ADSR. Some extra bass came from a Minimoog sample, which is introduced the second time around for interest. Strings The need for a string machine was an ideal excuse to use the Streichfett. It's good, but has way too much top-end for me, and I put it through one of my Oakley Moog Filters. To add further interest, I used the envelope follower on the filter to add some rising resonance on each note. Finally, I turned the internal Phaser off, and put the strings through my MXR Phase 100. I'm not sure the Phase 100 featured in the original, but as it was used in some classic Gary Numan tracks, and I know there is a connection to Tubeway Army and Billy Currie, it was worth a go. The MXR sounds better anyway... "Singing" Lead Synth It's such a haunting part of Vienna, and I spent sometime trying to recreate the sound. In the end, I used my Vermona Lancet. It needed further sound-shaping and resonance, so I used my Polymoog Resonator from Grove Audio. The sound was too forward, thick and bassy, so I took a bandpass feed from my Telemark (SEM) eurorack filter, for a more "lonely" sound. Finally, I played the part whilst using the Filter and Vibrato controls. Polymoog Eurorack filter from Grove Audio: https://www.groveaudio.com/pmreso_eu.... Solo Violin Billy Currie is an exceptional musician. For the solo part, he may have used a Viola? As I don't have a decent Solo Viola instrument, I used my Joshua Bell Solo Violin from Embertone. The articulations were crucial as I wanted to convey the emotion Billy bought to the original. Finally, it was a bit too clean and "polite", so I added some phaser and distortion to make it cut-through at the right moments. Lab4Music Sipario Midi Router I must mention the Sipario. It has transformed how I access my synths from my Kawai ES8 piano. It generally makes music-making more spontaneous and enjoyable. Worth every penny: https://www.lab4music.it/sipario.php?... #Vienna #Ultravox #Synth #80s #Analog #Music
