I finally found time this month to make a book for @areyoubookenough and the theme this month was ‘clothing’. A lot of the work I’m making at the moment involves my families old clothes and I am obsessed with using every scrap and not wasting anything! So this challenge fitted perfectly. I made a book with lots of little scraps of left over fabric from old clothes already used, alterations to new clothes and gifted fabric from the projects of others. The majority are my families clothes. I sorted the scraps into colour groups then added some mid tone denim to each pile so as to have one thing running throughout to hold it all together visually. I wanted to keep all the threads hanging so the making was very obvious and I love the contrast between both sides. While making I was thinking about families/communities. This book is like a microcosm of these. One side is the finished, organised and tidy side that is shown to the world. The other side is the messy, disorganised, unraveling side that we often hide from the world. But it struck me that each side cannot exist without the other. Also that each piece of fabric is integral to the overall integrity of the complete piece. Each piece brings its own colour or structure or texture that is necessary for the whole. So the lesson is we are all important in our own unique ways, we matter more than we know! I really enjoyed making it :)
