Prof Reinhard Stauder, Prof Lodovico Balducci, Prof Antonio Cherubini, Prof Lazzaro Repetto, Prof Mario Boccadoro. Prof Reinhard Stauder (Innsbruck Medical University, Austria), Prof Lodovico Balducci (Moffitt Cancer Centre, Tampa, Florida, USA), Prof Antonio Cherubini (Perugia University Medical School, Italy), Prof Lazzaro Repetto (Istituto Nazionale Ricovero e Cura Anziani, Rome) and Prof Mario Boccadoro (San Giovanni Hospital, Turin, Italy) discuss the integration of geriatric oncology and how to improve collaboration between geriatricians and haematologists. The care of elderly patients is highly complex and is becoming more and more so with the development of many new drugs. There are many issues to account for such as comorbidities or drug tolerance and as a result it is important for haematologists and geriatricians to cooperate effectively to manage the long term care of these patients and to prepare an individualised treatment plan. The panel discuss the importance of recognising a patient's true physiological age, the need for more elderly patients in clinical trials and identify the need for high quality tools for screening and treatment. Some tools may be more appropriate for intensive and some for less intensive treatment and clinicians must weigh up the risks and benefits of each treatment option before deciding which is most appropriate for the individual patient. The discussion took place at the Blood Cancer in the Elderly European Expert Forum, Rome, 19-20th March 2011.
