Adenoids are part of our Immune System and are largely active during the first few years of life. They are a part of the Waldeyer's ring - a chain of tissues that help in imparting immunity. The Adenoids are placed in the Nasopharynx- an area immediately behind the nostril and above the throat. The Adenoids are mucosal tissue - that is, they are directly present on the surface of the mucosa. Enlargement of the Adenoids causes two main problems Nasal Blockage - leading to snoring, mouth breathing, sleep sleep-disturbed breathing (and its consequences). It also leads to maxillofacial deformities like a high-arched palate, crowded upper incisors, etc. Eustachian Tube Blockage- this leads to middle ear problems in the child (The Eustachian Tube has the important function of keeping the middle ear filled with air and maintaining normal pressure in the middle ear)- heaviness in the ears, sense of blockage, pain, impaired hearing. Sometimes there may be long-term changes in the eardrum of the child. As a result of long-standing problems related to enlarged Adenoids, your ENT Specialist may recommend that the Adenoids be surgically removed.
