Kuwaiti Emir meets Iran FM in landmark visit

(2 Jun 2014) Kuwait's emir, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah left Iran on Monday, at the end of a two-day visit to the country. The visit by the emir, the first in decades, was aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and came as relations continued to thaw between the Gulf nations under President Hassan Rouhani. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif hailed the visit as historic, saying it has begun a "new chapter in the commercial, political and cultural ties" between the two countries. The Kuwaiti ministers of Oil, Economics, Trade and Foreign affairs had accompanied the emir during the visit. Rouhani has vowed to improve relations with neighbouring countries since taking office in August. Zarif travelled to several Gulf states, including Oman, in December. Traditionally, Saudi Arabia and other Western-allied Arab nations in the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council have been wary of Iran's influence in the region.
