Midi running over a USB cable is convenient, unless you need a long cable run. Midi cables are actually capable of going a surprisingly long distance. If you learn how to create your own adapter, you can turn any standard five pin midi run into a standard three conductor cable. That means mic cables, stereo headphone cables, or anything with three connectors. There are lots of applications for this, but amongst my favorite is the ability to grab a midi keyboard and work with a vocalist in the live room while all of my synthesizers remain in the control room. Remember that you will need two adapters: one on each side of the cable. If you are creating a midi to XLR adapter, you will need one male and one female. Be aware that the pinout diagram for midi is not intuitive. With the pins on the bottom, facing you, from left to right, they are three, five, two, four, and one. You only need to connect pins two, four, and five. For XLR cables: Midi five – XLR two Midi two – XLR one Midi four – XLR three And remember the XLR pins are backwards when looking at male or female adapters. #AudioEngineer #Recording #Mixing #Studios #StudiosLife #Producertips #AudioEngineering #Midi
