A light wind and warm water were inviting to finally try foiling with the help of Wildert, a very skilled kiter. We went to the lake ‘Binnenschelde’ (Bergen op Zoom), known for safe and spacious chest-deep waters. My first waterstarts were quite scary, as a Gong foil was just shooting out into the air, despite my efforts to load the front foot. Finally, I was so fixed on the front foot pressure that faced the opposite problem - a nose dive and failed taxi/fly. Too many new variables, like, waterstarting with a board completely turned on its side, then riding with extra-weight forward, little edging and kite high. My Naish foil-board has a low volume (19L), which helps to turn it for placing the feet. Yet, its tiny nose and a round/twitchy skim-shape complicates the balance control once standing up and engaging the foil lift. So, it seems that I'm again “back to square one”, like with a twintip 2 years ago or a strapless surfboard last year. I'm wondering how many sessions will take to get flying on a foil and enjoy summer breezes.
