The annual Lawyers’ Ball, organised by Vienna University’s law students, provided the Strausses with a wealth of terminology for the titles of their dedication dances. Eduard’s waltz Theorien, meaning legal theory, was his perfectly named contribution to the dazzlingly successful ‘Juristen-Ball’ held on 22 January 1874 in the Vienna Musikverein. The ball reviewer for the Neues Wiener Tagblatt waxed lyrical: ‘A new waltz, “Theorien”, which Eduard Strauss dedicated to the Committee, was introduced to the dance repertoire with gusto. Every legal theory, my friend, is grey – except for the one that is danced to the sound of Strauss’s fiddle. And in these theories there is nothing grey or dreary, for they grow on the golden tree of life and dancing.” His rival on the Fremden-Blatt concurred, adding that the new waltz ‘found favour through its charming melodies and sparkling rhythm’. The sombre introduction, in the minor key, imparts an air of foreboding, but this mood is at once dispelled by the sequence of joyful waltz melodies which ensue.
